Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) affects about 15% of women of reproductive age, yet many women experience symptoms for years before receiving a diagnosis.
Common concerns like acne, irregular cycles, or hair changes can sometimes be signs of underlying hormonal imbalance. While PCOS is diagnosed through lab work and medical history, the body can often show visible clues that something deeper may be happening.
At Gina Neonakis Naturopathic Services in White Rock, many patients from Vancouver and the surrounding areas seek support for hormone-related concerns like PCOS.
Here are five visual signs that may be associated with PCOS.
PCOS-related acne often appears along the jawline, chin, and lower cheeks. These breakouts tend to be deep, cystic, and persistent, often linked to elevated androgen hormones.
Increased hair growth on areas like the chin, upper lip, chest, or lower abdomen may occur due to higher androgen levels. This condition is called hirsutism.
Some women with PCOS experience hair thinning near the temples or along the part line, known as androgen-related hair loss.
Dark, velvety skin patches on the neck, underarms, or inner thighs may be a sign of insulin resistance, which is commonly associated with PCOS.
Small skin tags on the neck or underarms can sometimes be linked to metabolic changes and insulin resistance seen in PCOS.
Not every symptom means PCOS, but if you notice several of these signs along with irregular cycles or hormonal symptoms, it may be worth exploring further.
